Impact driving of monopiles in centrifuge: effect on the lateral response in sand

This study examines the influence of impact-driven installation on subsequent horizontal monotonic response small-scale monopiles by using a large-beam geotechnical centrifuge at 100g. A special device including hammer was developed to install open-ended 50 mm in diameter an embedment depth 250 flight, and then apply lateral loading monopile head without stopping centrifuge. The global local responses were investigated for two methods installation: impact driven 100g, monotonically jacked 1g into saturated dense sand. results highlighted main features. (a) effect driving pronounced small amplitudes loading. With regard conditions serviceability, in-flight increased secant stiffness about three times compared with installation. For large amplitude displacement, capacity 1.3 times. (b) experimental p–y curves obtained from remained smoother than those predicted offshore standards, but similar them.
